San Francisco, CA, September 26, 2024—October first is worldwide International Longevity Day, and the Healthspan Action Coalition will mark the day with a public rally in the heart of San Francisco’s research and healthcare community. The event, which will be led by HSAC co-founder and Chief Operations Officer, Melissa King, also kicks off Healthy Aging Month (October).

“Our goal,” said HSAC co-founder and Executive Director Bernard Siegel, “is to bring awareness to critical longevity research, which we see as extending the human healthspan so that as people age, they retain the good health needed to make the most of life. Many avenues of research hold promise, but the field still needs vigorous advocacy to connect all the dots and get new therapies to our aging population.”

The rally will be held from 11:30 – 2:00 pm Pacific time at Spark Social San Francisco in the Alcoves, where participants will meet to show support for longevity research and healthspan extension. Age-related diseases are the major causes of death and impose a huge burden of illness and disability on all the developed nations. Scientists have long suggested that there may be an under-appreciated but important link between aging and many chronic disorders, all of which are characterized by an acceleration of the aging process. At the same time, intervening in the aging process could delay or even prevent a large number of illnesses that can plague the later decades of life.

“This goal is not a pie-in-the-sky idea,” says Siegel. “Research in recent years has shown time and again that the aging process can be manipulated and even reversed in animals. Now we need to translate this science into human treatments. Our strategy is to harness resources and expertise from all sectors of the longevity ecosystem, coordinate them and create new synergies among patients, scientists, advocates and policy makers to move the field forward.”

“Like last year’s rally, this event is open to anyone who supports healthy aging and the mission of making our later years healthy and disease-free,” said Melissa King. “It will be a fun way to connect with like-minded people and show that we all have a vested interest in not only living longer, but living fully and vigorously in our later years. This event will be both a celebration of progress and a call for more resources to be allocated to this goal.”

About Healthspan Action Coalition: HSAC is a nonprofit organization working on multiple levels to extend the global human healthspan. It unites a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the search for, development of, and delivery of new medical treatments aimed at extending not just the lifespan, but the period of life spent in good health and free of disease or disability. While recognizing that virtually all human disorders entail an acceleration of the aging process, the organization seeks to harness the latest developments in longevity research as a new avenue of disease treatment and prevention. Its mission is to create a worldwide, cross-sector, societal movement aimed at bringing together the disparate forces that have the ability to ensure that every person on the planet has the resources to live not only longer, but to remain healthy, vital and independent until the very end of life. It is led by a team of seasoned, experienced individuals and scientific pioneers with proven track records of effecting major change in the aging, science and healthcare fields.
