Professor of Pathology and Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University
Dr. Monnier is a Professor of Pathology and Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University. He obtained his MD degree and MSc. in Chemistry from the University of Basel (Switzerland). He did his postdoc with A. Cerami (Rockefeller University) from 1977-1982 and moved to CWRU in 1982. The focus of his laboratory is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which the Maillard Reaction contributes to the aging process and metabolic disorders and leads to impairment of long-lived proteins such as collagen and lens crystallins. His current research focuses on understanding the structure and biomedical significance of advanced glycation endproducts in diabetes and aging. Dr. Monnier is the founding president of the International Maillard Reaction Society and an elected Fellow of the AAAS.
